Newcomers power a season opening shutout
Mississippi State opened the season with a 3 to 0 home win over South Alabama, scoring once before halftime and twice late in the second half. Kati Anne Shepherd scored the opening goal in the fifth minute. Hailey Johnson and Reganne Morris added second half goals. State held a 26 to 4 advantage in shots and did not allow a shot on goal.
The clean sheet was not just a goalkeeper story. Allowing no shots on goal means the work in front of the goal deserves credit too. State also kept creating chances after halftime instead of sitting on one early finish. That is a sensible standard for an opener: make the opponent work for every chance, then keep looking for the next goal.
